Rainstorm Destroys 2,000 Houses In Delta Communities

Torrential rain fall accompanied with heavy wind in the early hours of last Thursday destroyed over 2,000 houses in Sapele and its environs in Delta State.
While residents of the affected houses have been rendered homeless, over 3,000 residents of neighbouring communities in Sapele have reportedly fled their Romes after devastating flood ravaged the areas.
Investigation showed that affected areas include: Cemetary road, behind former NEPA, Adeola road by Sapele Clinic, Gana, Amukpe, Okirighwre and Okpe road by Omare Primary School.
It was gathered that the early morning rainfall apart from destroying houses also destroyed electricity poles including economic plants in the area.
Victims of the unfortunate incident, further investigation revealed lost properties worth N50million and have relocated to makeshifts where they called on the state government to come to their aid.
Speaking to our correspondent, some of the victims, one of them Sunday Efetobore, said they lost virtually all they have acquired in life, lamenting that all they laboured for over the years were completely destroyed.
In the last three weeks, residents of Ika community Ozoro, Asaba and Ibusa have been under siege of erosion menace including heavy flood disasters, especially when it rains.
Worse still, is the poor drainage system whose contract was allegedly awarded to indigenous contractors (names withheld) who executed poor jobs thereby posing threat to lives and property.
Sources said over 16 communities have been cut off in Aniocha South following devastating erosion menace but the state commissioner for Works, James Augoye in a swift reaction, said the state government was committed to making erosion problem in the state a thing of the past.

Delta State Government has debunked rumours of a reported outbreak of Cholera in some parts of the state

Speaking to reporters on Friday in Asaba, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr Sunday Otobo, who led a team of the ministry’s officials, said that there was no confirmed outbreak of cholera in the State but that there were incidents of stooling and vomiting recorded in Aladja and  Udu Local Government Areas.
Dr Otobo explained that various samples had been taken to Lagos for testing and none had been confirmed to be suffering from cholera.
The Permanent Secretary also stated that Governor Ifeanyi Okowa had directed health officers in the 25 local government areas of the State to be proactive in detecting and tackling any outbreak of diseases in all communities.
He  said that the State Governor had also instructed that the water plant in the community be resuscitated and put in use to provide potable drinking water for the community.
A Clean Environment
Governor Okowa said that the State Government had taken measures to ensure that the people of the area were sensitised on the need to keep their environment clean and maintain healthy living standard.
“The Ministry of Environment is also going to mobilise people in Aladja to make sure that environmental policies that will not endanger the health of the people are put in place, so that everybody in the community maintains a clean environment and also find a way of proper disposal of faeces.”
The Permanent Secretary said that the Ministry of Health had a monitoring team on ground in the community to sensitise the people, monitor the situation on ground and report back to the Ministry.
He stated that the health centers in the community had been equipped with drugs to treat the patients.
“Health is a collective responsibility and the government cannot provide everything. Even if the government provides you with clean water, it is your duty to store water in clean containers and importantly, you have to keep your environment clean”, he added

Okowa Gingers University Alumni Association

WORRIED by the sorry state of Nigeria universities, Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, has challenged alumni associations to redeem the image of universities just as he decried situation where most Nigerians now seek to attend universities.
Okowa who spoke yesterday in Asaba when members of the University of Ibadan Alumni Association (UIAA) visited him, said that in time past Nigeria universities were sort after by foreigners who trooped in their thousands.
The governor an alumnus of the University of Ibadan where he took a degree in Medicine said that the alumni associations had a lot of roles to play in ensuring that their alma mater was a better place to seek knowledge.
He said: “A lot is going wrong nationally in our universities, they are not exactly where they are supposed to be, I think that at this critical point in time, it is really important for our alumni associations to begin to look inwards to find ways of supporting our universities to be what they ought to be

DELSU 2015 Admission Fraud Alert

The attention of the University Management has, once again, been drawn to the nefarious activities of some faceless individuals who are out to defraud unsuspecting candidates seeking for admissions into the Delta State University for the 2015/2016 academic session.
Information at the disposal of the University Authority indicates that these individuals are collecting money from candidates, by deceiving them that they have been offered provisional admissions into the Delta State University.
Suffice it to state here that the fraudsters have purportedly registered one Company known as Okamunu Progress Enterprises, with one Dr. Abubakar Ibrahim as signatory to the Company’s Account No. 3094435574 with First Bank Plc. Their victims are made to pay the sum of N191,250 into the account.
The said Dr. Abubakar Ibrahim, according to our source, forwarded the underlisted breakdown to their victims as fees charged by the University. One of their victims unsuspectingly paid the amount into the said account.
It is pertinent to reiterate for the umpteenth time that the University has not commenced the sale of Post UTME form; and therefore no candidate has been offered provisional admission for the 2015/2016 academic session. Candidates are hereby advised in their own interest to discountenance such information.
They should not patronize these fraudsters who are out to defraud unsuspecting candidates in respect of the 2015 Post UTME screening exercise of the Delta State University.
For the avoidance of doubt, the above table did not emanate from the University and is not a reflection of fees chargeable by the University.
It should therefore be totally disregarded by staff, students, parents/guardian and the general public.

BAN ON POURING OF WATER, POPPING OF DRINKS, BREAKING OF BOTTLES AND RECKLESS DRIVING AT THE END OF EXAMINATION BY GRADUATING STUDENTS

This is to inform staff, students, other members of the University community and the general public that the University Senate of its 137 th regular meeting held on Wednesday, 25 th February, 2015 was informed of the activities of some students who in the euphoria of matriculation and graduation have
Senate was further informed that the action of some students regarding the last matriculation exercise almost led to loss of life of two students at Asaba Campus.
Other activities include popping of drinks and breaking of bottles on the road as well as reckless driving at the end of 2 nd semester examination.
Senate frowned at this nonchalant and unholy attitude of some of the students and decided as follows:
a) That any students found to be involved in unwholesome activities would be appropriately sanctioned.
b) That the aforementioned activities remain banned in all the Campuses of the University.
Consequently, students are kindly enjoined to adhere to the above directive; as any student who contravenes the Senate decision will have him or herself to blame
been observed to perpetrate all sorts of unwholesome acts like pouring of water on fresh students in their sleep on matriculation day.

DELSU Released List Of Students Punished For Examination Malpractice

The Delta State University has released the summary of final joint report of the two groups of examination malpractice mobile disciplinary committee for first semester of regular/ continuous education (CE) programmed for
2014/2015 academic session from 30th March to 30th April, 2015.
Following the report, about 124 students have either been expelled, rusticated or had their
certificates withdrawn for various Malpractice during the examination.

DELSU Post-Ume Is Finally Out!

This is to inform aspirants of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka that the 2015 Post-UTME has been announced.
ELIGIBILITY
Although Jamb decided the cut off for the Delta State University, Abraka, all candidates who chose DELSU as their first choice of University and scored 180 and above can apply, but they must submit a copy of the jamb result with a scratch card attached to verify the result.
METHOD OF APPLICATION
Candidates are required to visit http://www.delsuonline.com to generate a virtual PIN with N3,000.00 (three thousand naira only) for the screening and for accessing the result online.
This does not include bank charges. Bank charged N1 000.    Payment should be made to any of the following banks: Unity Bank, Ecobank, UBA, Zenith Bank, Fidelity Bank.
Ensure that Jamb Registration Number and Names are correctly entered. Errors will not be entertained.
PROCEDURE TO GENERATE VITUAL PIN

iii. Click Start
iv. Click Post-UTME or Post-Direct entry

vi. Complete the form with valid JAMB Registration Number

SCREENING DATE & DETAILS

The Post UTME shall be by Computer Based Test (CBT)
SUBJECT FOR SCREENING: Candidates will be screened for knowledge in the relevant UME subjects for their chosen course of study.
Candidates are expected to identify their venue and seat number before the scheduled date of examination.
Candidates are required to come to the screening venue with the following:
i. A copy of print-out of venue and seat number
ii. A copy of the print-out of completed on-line confirmation of application.
iii. UTME Original Result Slip with your passport photograph on it. If you do not have this document, click here to get yours .
iv. Two recent passport sized coloured photographs with the full names of candidate and signature on the reversed side of the photograph.
